I have read through a lot of literature on leadership, its traits and theories etc. . But, my most important learning have been through my corporate experience. In this post, I would like to highlight one such learning which I think is an important element of a leader’s role in the organization.
I still remember one of my ex-boss speaking to us in the orientation meeting on the day I joined the company. He told us that he wants us to perform to the best of our potential and contribute our best towards the growth of the company. And he has a very important role to play in its facilitation. I still remember his words – “I am like Lord Ganesha for you, who will remove any obstacles, hurdles or problems that come your way. You can anytime approach me if you have any issue or problem of any sort. (Note: Lord Ganesha is a revered God in Hindu religion in India). “

Such powerful words! The power lies in the visualization power of this statement. We got connected to the visualization of Lord Ganesha instantly and understood what is his role for us. I would have simply forgotten this story like hundreds of others we witness everyday, but this single important element has ensured its place in my memory till today.
Besides the storytelling power of these words, I believe, it articulates an important function or the job of a leader. He is supposed to take care of his employees/team like anything. His role is not confined to allocating them jobs and appraise them at the end of it. In order to get their jobs done in the most effective and efficient way, he has to treat their concerns and problems as his own and try to resolve them as soon as possible. This support provides a great motivation to the employees and in turn, builds good leaders for the future as well.
