Your social media connections do not substitute for actual human intimacy. Just because someone connects with you on Linkedin or follow you on Twitter doesn’t mean they’re your friends.
Sometimes, Social media can create a false sense of intimacy, particularly when people choose to expose a lot about themselves. It has allowed us to have broader relationships, but at the end of the day, human relationships haven’t changed — we haven’t increased a human being’s capacity to have close associations with a lot more people.
At the same time, these weak ties are very powerful and immensely useful for us. For example, you can find enough about an old friend or an acquaintance in 15 minutes from his social media profiles. You can get to know his present interests, background, things he follow etc. before re-establishing that connection.
