My Mac threw out the following definition of a ‘parenthesis’ – “a word or phrase inserted as an explanation or afterthought into a passage which is grammatically complete without it, in writing usually marked off by brackets, dashes, or commas”.
Interesting one – no? A parenthesis would have the information which may not be necessarily needed but still provides that additional information. It may not be asked for, but once inserted – provides an interlude or an interval for the reader. This makes me wonder:
- Do we need parenthesis in our lives – breaks that allows us to get more context, more clarity around the ongoing stuff?
- Can other people, situations or just breaks constitute parenthesis for me?
- Can we become parenthesis for others – providing them the support they need, the clarity they need as they move on with the ongoing phase of life?
Parenthesis matter the most when the sentences are complex, long and sometimes boring – sounds like the story of our lives, I guess – makes a case for it?
